Prepping Your Skin

August 9, 2018

Proper skincare is such an important part of ensuring your makeup looks flawless throughout the day.  Our artists can do a lot with the skin prep items in our kits but regular maintenance is key to ensuring the health of your skin and longevity of your makeup.  Below are a few tips and products that will help you prepare for your upcoming wedding or event.

Cleansers

You'll want to pick a gentle cleanser that is suited for your skin type.  I personally have oily skin and find that an oil based cleanser actually helps to balance my skin.  My favorite is the Sonia Roselli Japanese Cleansing Oil because it's a one step cleanse that removes makeup, dirt, and oil leaving your skin nourished and hydrated without any residue.  I also really love Lancome's Foaming Honey Cleanser.  It works in a similar way to the cleansing oil and smells divine.

Exfoliator

Exfoliation is an important part of your skincare regimen and should be done a minimum of 2 times per week. Regular exfoliation will ensure your skin tone and texture is ideal for makeup application and will help serums and moisturizers penetrate a lot deeper.  I prefer an acid based exfoliator over a scrub since they tend to be more gentle while still powerful. Abrasive scrubs can cause micro cuts in your skin which allow bacteria to enter and cause irritation and even wrinkles. Some of my favorite chemical exfoliators are the Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Peel Pads, Tarte Knockout Tingling Treatment, and Sonia Roselli Sex A Peel.

Moisture

Replenishing moisture in your skin is crucial to your skin's overall health.  Peter Thomas Roth Water Drench Hyaluronic Cloud Serum is an excellent Hyaluronic Acid serum that will work throughout the day to pull hydration into your skin without feeling greasy or heavy.  Sonia Roselli Water Balm is a makeup artist favorite and staple in my makeup kit.  It's great for day or night and is excellent for all skin types.

Eye Cream

A lightweight eye cream will do wonders to reduce dry, crepey under eyes.  I use either the Shiseido Benefiance WrinkleResist24 Intensive Eye Contour Cream or Dermalogica Intensive Repair Eye Cream.  They are both lightweight enough to sit well under makeup and don’t cause concealer to crease throughout the day.  Best of all, they’re unscented and they don’t irritate sensitive eyes.

I know all of this seems like a lot of steps but in reality, it only takes 10 minutes to properly prep your skin.  You’ll find that, not only does your skin look healthier and more radiant, your makeup will look better and last a lot longer.  A little self care will also give your mood a boost and give you that youthful glow that we’re all after.
